Indiana Senate Bill SB 337, the Designers Registration Act
Central Indiana NARI is still standing with NKBA, AIA, IDPC, and others, in opposition to this bill. You can find information regarding this bill on the Indiana State website www.in.gov
Currently, the bill is dead in the House committee, but it has been resurrected in the form of an amendment to HB1573.
NEW INFORMATION
Steps you can take:
Write your senator today, and let him or her know of your opposition to the ammendment to HB 1573. Find your Legislator
Write your state representative to voice the same opposition
Write the Governor, asking him to withdraw his support for this bill, especially since it has exactly the same effect as the bill he vetoed 2 years ago, contrary to what his chief of staff may have told him.
You may write your own letter, or use our template letter as a guide.
Central Indiana NARI’s Position
- The functions stated in the bill do not affect public safety, welfare, and health
- These functions are already registered and certified by The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ - a private organization - ie: not tax dollars) by their NATIONAL exam which would still be required thru this bill - This shows that there is no benefit to Indiana businesses or residents since there are many equally reputable exams that cover this area of talent.
- ASID’s stated purpose is to regulate who can and who cannot perform these functions in all 50 states
- Other states have already been down this road, see California, Florida, Alabama (which recently was overturned due to unconstitutionality), and others, to negative effect
- This will affect, not only my business (already established in Indiana), but many others in MANY OTHER OCCUPATIONS who also perform these duties - even though they don’t call themselves interior designers.
- The state does not need to be wasting my tax dollars to oversee occupational functions such as these that do not affect public safety

Reasons to Oppose SB337
I would encourage you to use these points for writing to the Governor also. Remind him of his own reasons just 2 short years ago.
